Massage/Bodywork Therapy

There are a variety of different styles, types and techniques of massage utilized by a massage therapists. A description of the types of massage provided by Simply Being are:

» Craniosacral Therapy
» Deep Tissue Massage
» Sports Massage
» Swedish Massage
» Trigger Point Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system- comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams or about the weight of a nickel, restrictions are released in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. Craniosacral therapy is both extremely gentle and extremely powerful. Clients are often surprised that, even though a therapist may be touching them very lightly, they feel the impact throughout their entire body. By complementing the body's natural healing processes, Craniosacral therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction. Craniosacral therapy is also a powerful tool for healing the emotional body and reducing stress.
A Craniosacral session generally last from 60 to 75 minutes. Clients relax fully dressed on a massage table in a soothing environment. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity, such as athletes, and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is also not uncommon for receivers of Deep Tissue Massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two. Deep tissue work varies greatly. What one calls deep tissue another will call light. When receiving deep tissue work it is important to communicate what you are feeling.[2]

Sports Massage

Sports massage is actually a form of Swedish massage that is delivered to athletes. Most commonly, sports massage focuses on increasing blood and lymphatic fluid flow, reducing and eliminating pain as well as tender trigger points, and increasing range of motion of the affected area. Sports massages can be broken into 4 distinct types - the pre-event sports massage, the post-event sports massage, the restorative sports massage and the rehabilitative sports massage. As the names indicate, each type of sports massage has a different focus for the athlete as they are delivered at different times during their training and performance schedule.[1]

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight weeks. It has also been shown to be helpful in individuals with poor circulation. The term "Swedish" massage is not really known in the country of Sweden, where it is called "classic massage".[2]

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points or trigger sites are described as hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. Trigger point practitioners believe that palpable nodules are small contraction knots[ambiguous] and a common cause of pain. Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness, referred pain, or local twitch response. The local twitch response is not the same as a muscle spasm. This is because a muscle spasm refers to the entire muscle entirely contracting whereas the local twitch response also refers to the entire muscle but only involves a small twitch, no contraction. The trigger point frequently radiates from these points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself.

Certified Personal Training (CPT):

Functional Programming for Stability-Mobility and Movement;

The human body is designed to move and develops in response to the loads placed on its individual systems. Decreasing levels of activity and a propensity toward poor posture and muscle imbalance alter normal physiological function within the neuromuscular systems of the body. This changes joint loading and movement mechanics, triggering compensations in the way people exercise and perform their daily activities, which ultimately triggers breakdowns along the major joint systems in the body. The main focus of the certified personal training I offer at Simply being is to re-establish appropriate levels of stability and mobility within the major joint systems of the body and train the body to move more effectively. The starting point for achieving this goal is an accurate assessment of posture, movement, core fitness, balance and flexibility. I will then help you choose the best exercises for your specific structural characteristics and the types of physical activities and movements that you perform most frequently during an ordinary day. The aim for the overall outcome is to live a more functional and healthy lifestyle with fewer aches and pains.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM):

Medication Therapy Management as defined by the pharmacy profession is a service or group of services that optimize therapeutic outcomes for individual patients. Pharmacist provide medication therapy management services to help patients get the best benefits from their medications by actively managing drug therapy and by identifying, preventing and resolving medication-related problems. Anyone who uses prescription medications, non-prescription medications, herbals or other dietary supplements may potentially benefit from medication therapy management services. My objective with Simply Being is to bring my experience of over 20 years as a licensed pharmacist to help empower clients to obtain the most benefit from their medications and live a more functional and healthy lifestyle with fewer aches and pains and to simply be.
